Backgammon Tournaments

Never played a live backgammon tournament before? Whether you’ve gained experience in online backgammon tournaments or you are new to the whole thing, the following guidelines would soften your first visit in a real-life backgammon event. Before the backgammon tournament, read the entry form to learn all about the accurate time and date, location, fees and so on. It is recommended to arrive earlier, so you will have a chance to consult with the tournament director about the most suitable division for you. Usually, it is advised to begin with the Novice Division. Yet, if your experience and skills rise above those of the average backgammon beginner, you might want to register for the Intermediate Division.

Backgammon Rules & Strategies Preparation

Go over the backgammon rules once again including legal and illegal moves, doubling rules and ending turns procedures. If you are used to play backgammon online, pay attention especially to the rules regarding the correct way to shake and roll the dice.Do you know how to count pips and calculate your odds using match equity tables? If you don’t, learn these important concepts before attending your first backgammon tournament. These would help you develop proper backgammon strategy and make the correct cube decisions during the tournament matches.

Backgammon Equipment Equipping

Equip yourself with a standardized backgammon board (at least 21×26 inch), precision dice (with rounded corners) and dice cups. If you don’t own some or any of backgammon equipment, try to borrow from someone who does own. And if you have never played on a real board, or you are accustomed to play on one side of the board, do practice the new habit/s before the backgammon tournament.

On the Backgammon Tournament

If you have any questions after the backgammon tournament has begun, you can be assisted with the tournament staff. Don’t feel embarrassed and remember that you are probably not the only rookie in the tournament and that even tournaments veterans make stupid errors like hitting without moving the checker and such.

However, to avoid misunderstandings, follow the draw sheet to ensure the number of points played on every match. Once a game is over, write down the score and make sure your opponent does the same. In addition, verify that the result of every backgammon match is reported.
