Play65 Sponsors Backgammon Art Exhibition | Play65 backgammon site is one of the leading sponsors of a special backgammon boards exhibition presented in Washington DC for the 60th Israel anniversary.
May 12, 2008 -- Play65 is one of the main sponsors of a unique art exhibition. In the group exhibition "The Art of Reconciliation" feature over 60 Israeli artists who turned standard backgammon boards into personal and inspirational pieces of art. "The Art of Reconciliation" will be exhibited at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library on Washington DC from May 12th until May 18th, 2008 and will arrive to Israel in August.
"The Art of Reconciliation" marks the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel. The backgammon art exhibition, which features 62 leading Israeli artists, sees backgammon not only as an original art material but as a symbol of "…the desire for peace and reconciliation between nations", in the words of the exhibition curators and producers Ayelet Biran and Doron Polak.
"The Art of Reconciliation" is sponsored by the District of Columbia Public Library, Israel's Embassy in Washington DC, The B'nai B'rith Center for Jewish Culture and the Israeli-based online backgammon website Play65. Play65 had also contributed the exhibition website that includes images of the 62 artistic backgammon boards, biographies of the exhibiting artists and information on the events expected to take place during the exhibition week.
The backgammon game, in which two opposing players are moving their pieces (or soldiers) from one side of the board to another, as a symbol of the wish for reconciliation, in the Middle East in particular, appears in many of the artworks and the artists' statements. For example, Dalia Eshet who wrapped the backgammon board with a Talith (Jewish praying shawl) and a Kaffiya (traditional headdress used by Arab men) and described her work as "two nations who are struggling, playing on one playground. Black & White interchangeable." But as most of the participating artists she expressed hope that "…at the end of the game, the players exchange shirts, embrace and shake hands!" |
